Product FAQ
Q:This probe has a very long unthreaded section (4.0 inches). In our mounting application, there is a risk of side-load or bending force being applied to this long, unsupported cylindrical section. Is this a concern for measurement accuracy or probe lifespan?
Q:We are using this armored probe in a dusty, abrasive environment. The armor is stainless steel, but will prolonged exposure to abrasive dust wear through the outer FEP jacket and then the armor?
A: Yes, this is a significant concern. The long, thin unthreaded section (4.0" of 8mm diameter steel) is not designed to withstand substantial side loads or bending moments. Such forces can:
Bend the Probe Case: Permanent deformation would misalign the internal coil relative to the tip and target, causing a calibration shift and inaccurate readings.
Stress the Threaded Junction: Excessive bending can concentrate stress where the threads start, potentially leading to fatigue cracking over time.
Damage Internal Components: In severe cases, it could damage the coil or its internal connections.
Recommendation: If the installation environment risks side impact or cable pull in a lateral direction, you must provide external support. This can be a steady-rest clamp or a supporting sleeve that holds the unthreaded section firmly, preventing bending. The armor protects the cable, not the probe case from bending.
A: The stainless steel armor provides excellent protection against abrasion, far superior to the standard FEP jacket alone. While highly abrasive dust could eventually wear through the outer FEP jacket over many years, the underlying braided stainless steel armor is extremely resistant to abrasion. It is designed specifically for such harsh environments. The risk of wearing through both the FEP jacket and the steel armor in a typical industrial setting is very low. However, for extreme conditions (e.g., sandblasting nearby), additional protective measures like a flexible conduit over the cable run are advisable. Inspect the cable periodically for any signs of severe jacket wear.
