Product FAQ
Q:For a 5-meter total system, we have this 1.5m probe. We plan to use a 3.5m extension cable. However, our cable routing path is complex, and the actual required extension cable length is 4.0m. Can we use a 4.0m extension cable to make a 5.5m system, or will this cause performance issues?
Q:The long metallic body of this probe will be installed very close to other grounded metal structures within the machine. Is there a risk of electrical shorting or interference if the probe case accidentally contacts these structures?
A: You cannot arbitrarily change the total system length. The 3300 XL Proximitor Sensor is ordered and calibrated for a specific total system length (5m or 9m). This length is the sum of the probe cable and the extension cable. If you use a 1.5m probe and a 4.0m cable, your total is 5.5m.
A: The probe case is electrically connected to the outer conductor (shield) of the triaxial cable. This shield is typically grounded at the Proximitor sensor. Therefore, if the bare metal case contacts another grounded structure, it is essentially connecting two ground points. This is usually not a problem for signal integrity and is often how the probe is grounded. However, you must avoid a scenario where the probe case becomes the only or a high-resistance path to ground, which could introduce ground loop currents. For optimal noise immunity, ensure a clean, single-point ground via the Proximitor. The greater risk from physical contact is abrasion wear on the probe case or introducing mechanical stress.
