Product FAQ
Q: We have a tight installation where two of these 8mm probes need to be mounted for axial position (thrust) measurement. The tips will be roughly 35mm apart, which is less than the recommended 40mm. What specific problem will this cause, and how severe is it?
Q:This probe has a 6.7-inch case. We need to install it into a mounting boss where the available thread depth is 0.7 inches. The datasheet states a maximum thread engagement of 0.563 inches for a 3/8-24 thread. What is the risk if we engage 0.7 inches?
A: Mounting tips closer than the recommended 40mm for axial measurements will increase electrical cross-talk between the two independent transducer systems. The 50mV cross-talk limit specified is a guideline under ideal spacing. At 35mm, the cross-talk will likely be higher (e.g., 75-100mV or more).
A: Engaging 0.7 inches exceeds the specified maximum of 0.563 inches and poses a significant risk. The maximum engagement is set at 1.5 times the nominal thread diameter to prevent binding. Exceeding it can:
Cause Binding/Galling: The probe may seize in the thread, making it impossible to remove without damaging the probe or the mounting boss.
Distort the Probe Case: Excessive engagement can exert side loads, potentially misaligning the internal coil.
Damage the Pressure Seal: The internal Viton O-ring seal may be over-compressed or sheared.
Void Warranty: Bently Nevada explicitly states that probes will not be replaced under warranty due to damage from excessive thread engagement.
Solution: You must either machine the mounting boss to reduce the thread depth to ≤ 0.563 in, or use a spacer/shims behind the probe's lock nut to limit how far it screws in.
