Does Orbit 60 Compact Mean the Bently Nevada 3500 System Is Being Phased Out?
Orbit 60 expands the options for new machinery-protection projects, but it does not automatically make an installed 3500 system obsolete. This guide separates lifecycle facts from migration assumptions and turns the comparison into a practical maintenance and procurement decision.
The Lifecycle Verdict: Coexistence, Not Forced Replacement
What the available manufacturer information supports
- Orbit 60 is described as Bently Nevada's next-generation machinery-protection and condition-monitoring platform.
- The 3500 remains in full product support and continues to appear in the current machinery-protection portfolio.
- Existing 3500 systems can remain practical when they continue to satisfy protection, monitoring and plant requirements.
What should not be claimed
- “The 3500 has already been discontinued.”
- “Orbit 60 Compact automatically replaces every 3500 installation.”
- “An Orbit 60 input module is a plug-in replacement for a 3500 monitor module.”
Compare the Three Platform Positions
Select a platform below to open its practical project role. These are different architectures and should not be treated as interchangeable product names.
Installed-base continuity Bently Nevada 3500 For established rack-based machinery protection and condition monitoring.
Best aligned with existing turbines, compressors, pumps, generators and process machinery already engineered around the 3500 rack, monitor, relay and communication architecture.
Next-generation projects Orbit 60 For new installations and major machinery-monitoring modernization.
Designed for projects that value higher-performance data, modern cybersecurity architecture, flexible inputs, distributed arrangements and closer System 1 integration.
Space-limited deployment Orbit 60 Compact For packaged equipment, machine-side mounting and restricted cabinets.
Extends the Orbit 60 architecture into smaller chassis formats. The current official page identifies seven-slot and eleven-slot compact options and indicates availability for early 2027.
| Decision factor | 3500 | Orbit 60 | Orbit 60 Compact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Maintain and extend an established 3500 architecture | New platform or planned modernization | Orbit 60 capabilities where space is constrained |
| Typical project | Existing turbine, compressor, pump or generator | New train, major overhaul or plantwide monitoring strategy | Packaged skid, machine-side or smaller cabinet |
| Key procurement question | Is the complete part number compatible with the installed rack and I/O? | Has the complete system architecture been engineered? | Do chassis capacity, location and environmental constraints fit? |
| Direct module swap? | Use only correctly matched 3500 modules and configurations | No direct plug-in swap from a 3500 rack | No direct plug-in swap from a 3500 rack |
Keep the 3500 or Evaluate Orbit 60?
Open the path that best matches the current project. A newer platform alone is not a sufficient reason to replace a protection system.
Continue with the 3500 Appropriate when the installed architecture remains reliable, sufficient and maintainable.
- The 3500/05 rack and 3500/15 power supplies operate reliably.
- 3500/22M, 3500/40M or 3500/42M functions meet monitoring requirements.
- Channel capacity, sampling and communication remain sufficient.
- The 3300 XL probe, extension cable and Proximitor Sensor chains are correctly matched.
- The installation continues to meet plant protection, API 670 and applicable safety requirements.
- No major machine, control-system or cabinet modernization is planned.
Evaluate an Orbit 60 migration Appropriate when the project requires a capability or architecture change.
- The rack is entering a major overhaul or cabinet-renewal cycle.
- Higher-resolution dynamic machinery data is required.
- Industrial cybersecurity requirements have increased.
- A more unified approach to journal-bearing and rolling-element machinery is needed.
- System 1 or Cordant Asset Health integration is a project priority.
- A new turbine, compressor train or packaged skid is being designed.
Recommended 3500 and 3300 XL models for installed-system maintenance
Use the left and right arrows to browse exact model examples. Always confirm the complete ordering number against the installed rack, I/O and transducer chain.
Migration Is a System Project, Not a Module Swap
A 3500/42M cannot simply be removed and replaced by an Orbit 60 input module in the same rack. The chassis, processing, I/O, configuration and communication architectures are different.
Signal and protection checks
- Probe, extension cable and Proximitor Sensor ordering numbers
- Total electrical length, sensitivity and target material
- Channel functions, alarm setpoints and Keyphasor requirements
- Relay voting, shutdown logic, recorder and buffered outputs
Cabinet and integration checks
- DCS, PLC, historian and System 1 communications
- Cabinet dimensions, power supply, heat load and wiring
- Hazardous-area and functional-safety requirements
- Configuration files, test procedures and commissioning records

Does Orbit 60 Compact mean the 3500 is obsolete?
Can an Orbit 60 module plug directly into a 3500 rack?
Should a stable 3500 rack be replaced only because Orbit 60 is newer?
Why is a full 3300 XL ordering number important?
